Starting points for Gopher users

Gopher at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, US

gopher://liberty.uc.wlu.edu

Afantastic alternative to "boom-box". Includes a WAIS-indexed database and provides a list of new gophers updated daily.

University of Minnesota "Home" gopher

gopher://boombox.micro.umn.edu

The "mother" of all gophers still maintains an impressive site. This has become a true Internet standard in the world of gophering. A must see.

Univ of Michigan gopher

gopher://gopher.umich.edu

This is a great place to start your gopher explorations!

Gopher Jewels

gopher://cwis.usc.edu:70/11/Other_Gophers_and_Information_Resources /Gopher-Jewels

As it says... neat places to gopher - constantly updated and changing.

Too much to list here. This is *the best* single gopher URL I could ever give to you. Mountains of info available here with pointers and gopher links to elsewhere. Nearly every topic is covered - even WWW access via Telnet is possible through here. Also includes search engines to find your way around gopher-space. It just doesn't get any better than this. For "burrowers" everywhere - give this Gopher Jewels URL a workout - you'll come back here time after time after time....

Yanoff Internet list

gopher://gopher.uwm.edu then select /Remote Information Servers/Special Internet Connections

A selection of great burrowing sites for your gopher client. Point your gopher here for great places to go. Updated frequently. A must see.

A special note to gopher users:

There are two wonderful search tools available for gopher users.

1. Veronica - Very-Easy-Rodent-Oriented-Netwide-Index-to-Computer-Activities

Almost every major gopher site can lead you to Veronica searching services and Veronica can search all of "gopherspace" (that's means it can do keyword searches both in the gopher server area you are in and throughout all the gopher servers available in the world). Veronica searches can be as simple as entering a single keyword or can include moe complex searches that can include AND/OR between keywords and can also include asterick (*) wild card searches too.

2. Jughead

Where you find Veronica - then you'll almost always find Jughead. Jughead does not do a search of all gopherspace - rather it only searches within the particular gopher site you are at when you initiate the search. This is a much faster service as your search is limited to the site. Of course this site-based searcher can help to keep your gopher searches quick and manageable.

3. Archie (for searching for files on FTP sites)

NO !!! Although it's name is reflective of the above comic book characters and keeps to the naming "thread" this searcher is for searching FTP sites and is not used to search Gopher sites.

Please see section 4 "Internet and Computer oriented Information" for more information on how to use the Archie search client.

The WELLgopher

gopher://gopher.well.com

Holy cow! This is a *monster* site (and that's good!). This gopher site is like hitting paydirt - in fact - this site is near legendary on the 'net. This gopher site houses a huge library of things to read all laid out in an organized fashion. There are things here you just won't get anywhere else and if you really want to keep up on the 'net scene and beyond you really *must* come to this site and read up. No excuses. Period.

Starting Points for Telnet users

Suncoast Free-Net

telnet ns1.thpl.lib.fl.us -or use- 204.198.80.2

login: visitor

Here is a wonderful "free" free-net site for all those who have access to telnet or have the ability to create a telnet session. This site provides a wide and varied array of information that is accessible (once you log in via telnet) through a numbered menu list. Rather than attempt to explain all the topics available I thought I would show you what the Menu looks like when you log in. Take a look! This site was listed here because not everyone has WWW access. However, most folks on the Internet on limited dialup unix connections or limited email/newsread connections still have access to telnet sessions. I hope this Freenet site helps some people.
